I think it might have been after Cass's recipe for the delicious lemon butter cake, I gave up and bought a set of cups for American measures. To save my sanity converting amounts! They were only a couple of pounds (£ not lb lol!) and they have been useful from time to time for other things.
I seem to recall that fish paste on halved finger rolls was standard birthday party fare when I was growing up. Maybe it was a Liverpool or Northern thing that didn't quite reach Cornwall!!

Posh people in Wales put it in in those volley vont thingies LOL
I always felt hard done by as a child. We always had homemade, homegrown and home cooked. All these exciting and exotic things my friends had in tins, jars and frozen were just not to be had in our house.
My mum even made her own butter! She drew the line at cheese but she would cook a ham or some such for sandwiches. Eggs were plentiful and in summer she would cook and serve mackerel fillets cold. Or make quiches and pies. If she could get it without spending money on it or just spend money on some ingredients then that's what we ate.
Birthday parties were for family. I lived in the arse end of nowhere so going round to a friend's for tea was rare and because I lived on a farm everyone wanted to come to mine not vice versa.
I'm having pease pudding for dinner tonight - that's another blast from the past that I discovered in a supermarket recently. Delicious with gammon or pork chops.
Don't ask me what I think of you, I might not give the answer that you want me to.
