My mum's favourite flowers were lily of the valley. She had a lovely patch just inside her garden gate.
I have tried for years and years ... for 20 years or more ... to get the darned stuff to grow in my garden. I've tried on my allotment too with no luck whatsoever. For the last three or four years I've had a pathetic show in a large ish pot. If I get two flower spikes its a miracle. And it never looks happy.
Last year I bought a couple of pots of LOTV at a plant sale that were clearly from someone's garden. A pound a pot it was. It'll never do I thought but more through sheer bloody mindedness than hope I planted it in a huge pot on the patio. Said pot is home to a clematis and a Rose and I shove annuals or bedding plants in the front. I shoved the LOTV near the back under the clematis.
Well *rude words* not only has it survived, it has chubbed up nicely but I would say there are somewhere in the region of a dozen flower spikes showing.
Now my darling mum's birthday would have been in four weeks. C'mon and flower your wee heart's out in time for her birthday. I'm so pleased!! But actually it did also make me shed a tear. I've done it Mum. I've only gone and bloody done it!
