On some other forums (non Proboards) they come in for a bit of stick. They made some soothing and relaxing albums but also some pretty way out stuff. I loved their earlier works and think Garlands and Treasure are masterpieces. I was just wondering, given the gender balance here and also the (slightly older) age range, who had heard of the Cocteau Twins who I saw recently described somewhere as folk-rock! I'm still not sure quite what they were. Liz Fraser is the lead singer and there is some connection with Robin Guthrie and Harold Budd and I do know they were Scottish, they hailed from Grangemouth. I'm going to leave two samples for anyone who doesn't know them and wishes to listen.
OH absolutely loved them and always played his favourite album tracks to death. (It was round about the time we got our first CD player and he just put a track on a loop) I wasn't quite so keen and after the seventh repeat of something was ready to run screaming from the house...........maybe that was his plan? Hearing a track now takes me back though!
Definitely heard of them and I though I would recognise some of their song titles but I don't have listened to bits of a few of them and I don't see to recognise any of them either. Seems they struggled to make the top 30, but I am definitely familiar with the name.
My moderator is a fan. Then again he's a cloth-eared twit. He can't read this so I can say it. What kronks says about not remembering is like you think you ought to with their funny song titles, on another forum (perhaps I should follow this up with Has anyone heard of The Fall?) people really lay into the Cocteau's for songs like Fluffy Tufts and Glass Candle Grenades. Kronks also is right, they did not pull up any trees in the charts but I think that's a good thing. Here's a single I bought from the album Heaven Or Las Vegas.
And yes, I am a fan, though not as huge a fan as some would have you believe. And certainly not as huge a fan as to fall for this latest p*ss take, a Frenchman wants some handouts to translate his Cocteau Twins book into a more readable language.
