I don't know that I'd consider it grim, @lewis. I feel more as if Rain Man is a little bit of a story of the selfish/self centered brother finding love in a place he never expected.
He did take advantage of his brother whom some would call an idiot savant when they counted cards. But there were some tender scenes between the brothers.

I dunno, maybe I should give it another chance, but I've tried it twice and never got past the first 20 minutes before deciding it's too depressing to continue. Maybe an "each to their own" thing.

So true. We all have our own taste. And I do have to be in a certain mood to watch some movies.
