Sunseekers are today warned there is no such thing as a healthy tan – and the fair-skinned should spend no more than ten minutes in strong sunlight.
New guidance urges adults and children to slap on up to eight teaspoons of suncream during the summer or when holidaying in hot climates. The advice has been drawn up amid soaring rates of skin cancer blamed on a lack of awareness and the boom in package holidays. There are now just over 13,500 cases of malignant melanoma – the deadliest form of skin cancer – in the UK a year and the incidence is rising faster than any other cancer.
NICE has issued its warning as thousands of Britons are booking holidays for the coming spring and summer. But it will be regarded by some as yet further ‘nanny state’ intrusion. Only last month the Chief Medical Officer Dame Sally Davies issued new guidance stressing there was no safe level of drinking.

Both my mother and sister have had skin cancer - neither baked themselves in the sun. My sister has to cover up nowadays to avoid getting it again. I have always used suntan lotion, hats and sat in the shade. Fair freckly folk is our type.
" ...... the fair-skinned should spend no more than ten minutes in strong sunlight."
In my case, it's about ten seconds and I never go out without factor 30 on. If I'm sitting in the garden it's always in the shade. Without sun factor on, I go a lovely shade of red and even with freckles it's not a good look. So I choose to stay 'light.'
That's one reason why I don't go abroad on holiday. I've never been a sun worshipper and if I went to warmer climes for a break I'd spend it in the shade so I might as well spend the time in 'sunny' Yorkshire.
I don't know what I'm supposed to do. If I go out in the garden for half an hour I change colour. With or without suncream.
I've had this conversation with someone before who advocates a light golden glow. That isn't possible for me. My skin doesn't ever go golden. It goes a darker shade of olive. Even now in the depths of winter my arms are still tanned from last summer. I'm never ever pale.
I am sensible in the sun and I do use suncream but I have only ever burnt a couple of times in my life. Once when I fell asleep for a few hours and once when I missed a bit in 90+ heat.
Our society is such a melting pot of heritage that we have people with Celtic or Scandinavian heritage living in sun baked areas like Australia and Florida. We have Mediterranean heritage types like me living in the UK. Our natural heritage tolerance to the sun is all messed up.
Skin cancer is a very real concern but this advice is barmy. No more than 10 minutes but we're advised 10/15 minutes sun exposure without protection to avoid problems with vitamin D!
Mr Cog has recently had 3 skin cancers treated, but they were caused by over exposure as a child, as he uses factor 50, and often comes home from holiday whiter than he left!
