Dozens of furious Tesco customers have claimed the store has 'ruined Christmas' Some customers who had bought the meat claimed it had gone off by Monday Others said it tasted like 'acid' and 'chemicals' and that they had to throw it away
I think a "use by" date of 26th December is a little close to the big day to risk. "Best before" is more lenient, and in any case a lot of folk eat the leftovers for several days after Xmas Day.
It should have been fine if the use by date was 26th, and probably for a couple of days after that. Sounds like they hadn't been stored properly by the supplier to me or in transit to the store. How angry would you be on Christmas Eve or Christmas morning!
I, also, think the storage of said turkeys must be called into question - I bought a turkey crown which the use by date was the 26th but thought 6 days in a fridge would be risky so I froze it, defrosted yesterday, cooked today ready for pickles, ham and salad etc.
I'm not suggesting this was the problem, but it's amazing how many people don't have their fridges set cold enough, especially when its being overloaded a bit.
I never did like Tesco so not a bit surprised that some of their turkeys were rotten - a bit like their fruit and veg that's inedible before the use by date.
A spokesman for the Food Standards Agency told Sky News it was aware of the coverage of the controversy and that it would be "looking into" the matter and "considering next steps". Complaints began surfacing on social media on Christmas Day about Tesco's turkeys which sell for up to £59 in its Finest Range
