The posts will be replaced by fewer, but mostly better paid, new management roles in each store.
Employees have the choice of either applying for these new roles or accepting a more junior position if unsuccessful. Otherwise they face redundancy.
B******s.
Worth thinking about next time you're using one of their self-scanners.
Mrs M got laid off from what was our new Sainsburys years ago, she thought the move from Morrisons was a good one having worked in another Sainsburys before that, but it turned out the shysters only wanted extra staff for Xmas.

I was pleased to read an article about a project between a university and a Scottish supermarket where a robot was introduced. Initially the shoppers welcomed the robot and the staff were not keen but in the end the robot got the sack because the shoppers did not find it helpful and the staff had got fond of it and were sad to see it go. The conclusion of the Supermarket owners was that while robots might be useful in the warehouse human beings were needed to work directly with customers.
The self scanners will soon be a thing of the past after seeing a video of a shopping app on the news today.
You scan the app on an iPhone when you enter the store, fill up your bag and place it on the checkout counter, and it scans the lot in one go, makes your bank payment and you simply walk out of the store with your bag. No contact with checkout staff at all.
You will eventually be able to use in most stores.
But I must say I like the self scanning doohickeys. It suits me. The Sains one can be done on your mobile phone but you do need to download it to a full. You can't just waltz out the door. Not just yet anyways.
Not going through the normal checkouts is quicker and cuts out one unload/reload for me, so I love scan and pack. I think there will always be a need for checkouts, but they will undoubtedly reduce. Hopefully, they will be able to use more staff in and around the store, there is certainly a need for it in my opinion.
I've yet to find a Sainsbury's with scan and pack. I've asked in two large stores with no success.
