When it was announced that Jeremy Clarkson would be the host, I thought it just wouldn't work at all, and he'd look very out of place there.
He really proved me wrong. I thought it was great: Clarkson didn't try to emulate Chris Tarrant, but instead made the role his own. I liked the 'Ask the Host' lifeline too: it wasn't very useful, but it did serve as an entertaining interlude between the quizzing!
The only thing I would say, though, is that it'd best done as a few specials every year. I wouldn't want it returning on a regular basis: it's very easy to overdo it!
Yeah, the contestant did very well on the first episode. A pity about the £500k question, though: that was painful to watch, because I knew the answer :( !
One thing I will say, though, is that there was a *lot* of padding this time around. They need to learn to edit these down >_< . (Or, perhaps they're intentionally dragging them out, in order to get through fewer contestants and thus keep the costs down :-/ ...)

I have just watched Episode 1 - dear Jeremy nearly talked her out of the lion! I like quizzes so difficult not to watch when I don’t have a big stash of recordings to see. The first contestant was very good.
Clarkson seems to have toned down the snide remarks, then again he was finally dealing with people who had an ounce of intelligence. I did despair of the twonk who struggled to get Andy Bell the Erasure singer, ffs Chris Lowe is the secondary Pet Shop Boy....but he won £64K five minutes later.
We watched the first show of the new series last night, didn't watch Clarkson's first series so cannot comment and didn't come to it with any previous judgement. On that basis, I thought he was a good question master, our only complaint was how it dragged on. The contestant was very good and I realise that they are told to ramp up the tension but we both got bored with her agonising over the question. That's us though, we are easily bored. There wasn't a trace of his laddish persona and he had a great poker face. I don't actually mind him. Throwing the punch was well out of order and has to be a sacking offence, shame it destroyed a funny, watchable programme.
It's a great pity the right of free speech isn't based on the obligation to say something sensible.
"I'm an accountant" asks his friend which actor played 007 in the film featuring the title song by A-Ha. Roger Moore? Piers Brosnan? Sean Connery? Timothy Dalton? His friend suggests Roger Moore. "I'm an accountant" decides to play 50/50 and is left with Connery or Dalton. "I'm an accountant" loses £7K.
