I bought a GTech Air ram a few years ago and loved it. In fact I haven’t used my Orek hoover since buying it. When the new model, the Mk2, came out I bought that too and put the older one upstairs, which saves my carrying one up and down the stairs. Lazy probably, but practical.
On Christmas Eve, I whizzed round the upstairs (or tried to) and was met with a horrendous screeching noise and all it did was push any fluff around. So it’s going to the tip on Friday.
I decided to buy a replacement and the new one will stay downstairs and the older Mk2 will go upstairs, to replace the “dead”one. Sadly, wherever I looked online, the price was the same - £199.99.
So early on Boxing Day, I rang GTech to ask if they had any upcoming deals. They told me that their sale had literally just started. The new Mk2 is arriving tomorrow and the sale price was £129.99, with a 2 year guarantee. That’s the lowest price I’ve ever seen it at. I’d looked on their site on Christmas Eve, but there was no mention of a sale, so I’m glad that I rang them or I’d have ordered one at full price. 😳
Apparently, if you buy from them direct you don’t have to register it, but to be on the safe side I’ll ring them tomorrow to check, once it’s been delivered. The other Air rams were registered because I didn’t buy from them direct, but the handheld gizmo that I bought from GTech (on offer) I didn’t register.
Delivery was delayed until today. GTech had dispatched it but DPD didn’t pick it up until yesterday afternoon. When I rang to query the status given in the email, the CS advisor said that DPD were extremely busy. That’s not surprising with all the sales.
Anyway, it’s arriving between 11:38am and 12:38pm today. (Very precise timing ) The old one went to the tip yesterday and is now presumably on its way to the great hoover graveyard.
It’s a tad pathetic, but I’m looking forward to zooming around with it later, especially as they’re powerful enough to leave tram lines on the carpets. I really must get a life!
As suggested by Nellie, I have also checked about registering it but CS told me that I don’t need to do that, as I bought it direct from them, because they have all the details on their records.
Nick at GTech might like to apply himself to a solution for your leaf problem, Toril.
A lightweight, hand held device that sucks them up, scrunges and compacts them into neat little "bricks" would be perfect.
I’ve actually got a leaf blower/vacuum, although it’s not by GTech. The only reason I don’t use it, apart from once, is that my extension lead isn’t long enough to reach most of the garden. The wind tends to do the blowing bit, but sucking them up would be more efficient than my current method (as proved recently by the tree surgeons.) I feel a visit to Amazon coming on now to find a mega long extension cable. 😉
And the Air ram arrived at 11:50am, so well within the one hour window. I’ve slotted it together, have given it a quick go (tramlines show the evidence) and it’s now on charge.
I’m really pleased that I ordered it when I did though because it’s now sold out.
Speaking of leaves etc Mr Y is already reaping the benefits of our new low maintenance garden. He was out with the leaf vacuum yesterday and the garden was restored to its neat glory in half an hour
Normally at this time of year its a daunting mess of soggy soil, grass and other shite but it looks pristine again and it hasn't even been jet washed
We've found standard leaf suckers/blowers are very heavy and the bags fill up too quickly - that is when they haven't been chewed by mice
Tom Conti once famously complained that he found it almost impossible to concentrate on learning his lines because of the constant noise of his Hampstead neighbours' gardeners and their leaf suckers. Third World problems eh.......
Don't ask me what I think of you, I might not give the answer that you want me to.
My leaf blower has a strap so you can “wear” it and so I didn’t find it heavy, BUT it pulverised the leaves into such tiny bits that the dust was forced out of the sides of the bag. Result? My black trousers ended up grey.
If I use it again (assuming I can get a very long extension cable) then I’ll put a plastic bag over the canvas one that’s on the blower.

A few years ago one of my neighours was using a leaf blower/sucker and he was fed up with having to keep emptying it and hit on the idea of attaching an old duvet cover to it instead of the bag, it worked perfectly that is until he tried to move it!
