Thanks Tinks will try and see how I get on with Windows 8 first but good to know I can change the look if it's necessary.
I've bought a new laptop and am in the process of setting it up, thankfully it looks like my last back up on the memory stick is OK but it doesn't have Microsoft installed my duff PC already had it when I purchased it apparently it is possible to uninstall it and then transfer it to a new PC but as it's dead I can't do that so will have a go with Libre Office

I use LiveDrive. Its an online doofer and it backs up my PC, my netbook and my laptop whenever they're switched on. Its about £30 a year. Perhaps not the cheapest but it does it without me thinking about it.
It also means I can access my documents, pictures etc from anywhere including on an app on my phone. Its somewhat of a no brainer.
I was a bit and his miss with backing up files and as luck would have it the week before the PC croaked I'd bought a new 64GB memory stick and so did a full back up of all my files

I think you will get used to it DD once you've had it for a bit, I switched from Windows to Mac last year and that was quite a change. Find it easy now and prefer it to Windows (I still use that at work)
Sorry to hear DD that your (not so old) laptop can't be fixed. Hopefully you will soon get used to the new one and its OS. Himself uses a laptop and before it was two years old the hard drive suddenly went, but of course that could be replaced. I use one of those Click Fee drives from Q for backing up.
I bought one of those very pretty butterfly adorned Vivian Tamm HP notebooks from Q a few years ago, it's still going but find it very slow to use. So like Snarly I've got down the Apple route with IPads and phone etc and do find them so much simpler to use and portable.
A mac is no go for me for work. It is clunky with some of the software I need and much as I love my iPad and iPhone, Macs are massively overpriced compared to PCs for the performance I want and need. And I'd have to change my database and PDF software completely and I've already paid for it. The exit cost alone on my database is £500 so knickers to that lol.
I spent the afternoon setting up the new laptop and I've installed Libre Office without too much hassle, it looks very much like Microsoft Office that I had on my old PC so shouldn't be too much of a problem for me and even better it's saved me £100 too, fantastic. I've managed to download my documents from the memory stick and convert them to Libre, there are a few missing but I think that's me not backing them up correctly rather than anything else, there were only a few that I was really worried about and I've got them so that's OK.
Having the tablet was great as an interim but it's lovely to see you all on a 15" screen and to be able to use a full size keyboard again

I don't like Mr FP's tablet at all. Clunky and cumbersome. On the other hand I much prefer my iPad to the laptop. The only thing I can't do on my iPad that I would like to is use my Serif Software.
I like the tablet but not to use all the time it's too small for my older eyes but as it's apps based its been a useful way to ease me into Windows 8 although I could have done without the expense at this time!

One false swipe of the hand & I'm done for with my tablet! I had to laugh the other day when I had a problem with my Kindle. Himself kept trying to swipe the screen He must have done it half a dozen times. 5 times out of the 6 he said, "Stop doing that!" as if the Kindle was to blame.
