Didn't really know where to put this so admin feel free to move it elsewhere if necessary
This morning I had a call from someone saying they were from my internet provider TalkTalk she said they had become aware of errors on my broadband and wanted me to check my PC so they could find out what was causing it. She told me how to look at a file on it and count the errors listed and said that it was very high and she would support me in sorting it out. Now I'm very aware of scams etc and don't consider myself to be stupid so I said 'I don't know who you are, you could be anyone ringing me I need proof you are who you say you are' she already had my full name and telephone number and reassured me by giving me my account number which I check on my bill and it was correct. Feeling a little happier I went through a few checks with her and she was able to confirm that the problem was with my router, they would send a new one and as I hadn't been receiving the level of security I had been paying for I was entitled to a refund which she would sort out for me. Again my suspicions were raised and when she talked me through to another window which my security software said was a dangerous site she tried to persuade me to bypass it which I refused, a few clicks later we ended up at the login for my internet banking I immediately said I'm not going there and she said we need this for your refund, needless to say I immediately cut her off, closed all the windows I'd opened, disconnected the router and unplugged the PC.
I rang TalkTalk who confirmed it was a scam they couldn't explain why she had my name, telephone number and account number and are looking into it. This scam may not just be confined to Talk Talk so be on your guard and warn your friends and families to be aware of these despicable people
I contatced my bank and they have put a block on my internet banking until I advise my PC is free of virus' so it's PC now gone away to be cleaned and checked for problems and any trojans etc

People who are wrong are just as sure they're right as people who are right, the only difference is they're wrong
Bank says as I didn't login and access my account they won't be able to get in and they've checked my accounts and there's been no transaction at least it's been logged should anything happen in the future! As to how much it's going to cost me to sort the PC out I'll keep my fingers crossed that that won't be too expensive

I am very unpleasant to unwanted callers after a couple of attempted Microsoft scam calls and all these solar panel/boiler/ PPI calls. With those you can usually tell instantly that it is a recorded message and put the phone down but tonight a live foreign voice wanted to speak to the home owner. I did my usual ,"Why?" - as soon as the words 'boiler' and 'government grant' were spoken I told her to "P*** O**" and not ring again. She is probably very poor and needy but I have had enough.
I'd like to know how this company knows my telephone number and also how they know that I am a TalkTalk customer. It was because of his claim to be calling on behalf of TalkTalk that I very nearly believed him. MS, York
It is possible someone who left the company in a huff had some names to sell, but it could be they just take a chance. If they say the are from TalkTalk and you are not with them they can just say sorry, our records are wrong and you probably wouldn't think twice about it. I get emails all the time telling me my NatWest/Halifax/LloydsTSB etc account has been frozen and log in here. I don't have accounts with them, but they obviously also hit plenty of people who do.
It's only because of threads like this that I've been made aware of the dreadful con merchants aka scammers out there and, because of this, I was able to deal with one who rang me.
They were apparently from Microsoft and knew my name and he said that they were aware of a problem on my computer. (I hadn't got a problem on my computer but I thought I'd play along with him, only because I knew the call wasn't bone fide and they were paying for it. ) Before we started, I asked him what make my computer was and he said he hadn't got that specific answer but he knew it had a problem. I said "That's odd ........ I'd have thought you knew everything, but let's continue."
He asked if my computer was on and so I asked him to wait while I logged on. (The laptop stayed in its bag. ) I then answered 'yes' and 'no' to the various questions he asked, although I was actually watching the TV with the sound down. After 10 minutes of waffling on, he suggested that I definitely needed help to rectify the issue, but I politely declined telling him that I would deal with it. He kept saying that he needed to deal with it (I assume that would have meant a payment for his super duper service) and so I asked him why I couldn't as I worked in IT. The phone went dead and I blushed for 'lying' because as you know I'm a teacher, but my bluff got rid of him.
But if I had really had a problem I'd have rung the ex or my son as they are both legitimately IT experts while I get excited if I manage to turn the computer on. 3_8_3
