I belong to a few Spinone groups on FB, and in February, we were alerted to the plight of a young male, in Cyprus.
He'd been dumped by a hunter (his former owner), and was in a shocking state. Emaciated to the point that his spine, ribs and hips were sticking out, covered in fleas and mites, sore from laying in urine and faeces. The concern was that although the people who ran the shelter were kind and did their best, they didn't have the money for vet treatment, or the facilities to ensure he would be safe. Being in such a vulnerable state, the worry was that other stronger dogs might try to pick him off, or that another hunter would come and take him, and if he proved 'useless', he'd either be shot, or more likely, just left to starve to death.
A fund was set up, and everyone contributed, they thought perhaps £1500 would be enough, but raised over £4000. A wonderful lady called Teresa, rushed straight to the shelter to get him and took him home. After numerous trips to the vet, and with the fantastic care she gave him, he was transformed from a barely alive wreck, to a wonderful, fun loving, playful handsome young man.
We knew that it would take several months for him to be fit enough to travel, and yesterday he had his final check and was passed fit to fly. This morning, Teresa took him to Paphos airport, where he was prepared and crated for his flight.
All afternoon one of the members has been tracking his flight and posting updates of his location. Just over an hour and half ago, he landed in Bristol where his new owners were waiting anxiously. Hopefully, by now, he's cleared the formalities, and is on his way to start his new life with a lovely family in Wales.
This was Brucie this morning waiting for his collar and harness to be put on so he could start his epic journey.
Gosh, now he has to learn Welsh? Oh well, the language of love is universal greek flag Snarly says WellDone to all involved. Bless 'is heart. Thanks Cog for daUpdate on Wales' newest resident.
He's arrived at his new home, and has already settled in! He doesn't seem any the worse for wear after his busy day. He's got 2 other Spinoni to play with so will be having lots of fun and company. He's going to have a lovely life with his new family, a million miles away from the horrors he's endured in his short life so far.
Whilst I understand that people have different customs and ways to us, I'll never understand it either Nellie. The fact that he's come so far in just a few short months is testament to the wonderful trusting nature animals have.
There are a few other Spononi in Wales too Snarly, but if you happen to see a handsome blond, it could very well be Brucie!
