About 6 weeks ago he suddenly developed what turned out to be Idiopathic Vestibular Disease. It made him move like he was seriously drunk. After a couple of days he started to improve and after 4 weeks was almost back to normal. Then last Friday it came on again with a vengeance (the water bowl all over the floor was the start of it!)and he was struggling to get around as he was so dizzy but by Saturday he was so much better and by last night seemed almost normal again.
Late this morning I thought he was a little wobbly but he went outside and seemed ok, and then about an hour ago he suddenly started spasming. I brought him in and put him on his bed and then realised a few minutes later that he had gone. He didn't seem to be in any distress and looked very peaceful. I can only assume that the stress of it all took a toll on his heart bless him. He was 15 1/2.
First time our house has been without a cat for almost 32 years.
Oh, I am so sorry to read this EarlyBird. At least he died peacefully at home with you and he had a good life. Small comfort at the moment I know, but sometimes you have to take comfort where you can. We all dread this day.
So sorry to hear about Harry. Doesn't get any easier losing them, no many how many times you've been through it, or how old they are. Sounds like a peaceful passing for the old chap, and you were with him at the end to say goodbye.
Thanks everyone. He was a pain in the derrière at times, but he was definitely loved, bless him. It didn't really hit me till this morning - all of a sudden I just burst into tears! The worst part of it all was having to tell the boys but they both suspected it wasn't too far off so they gave him lots of attention at the weekend and both said big goodbyes to him before they left. Secondborn can barely remember a time without Harry as he was only 4* when the little fluffy dynamo arrived!
At some stage we will have to decide whether to get another kitty or stick with being a dog only family for a bit, but that can wait for a while.
*He was 5 - I can't count!
