Argos has declared war on rivals such as Amazon by becoming the first to offer internet shoppers same-day delivery across the whole country.
The chain is introducing the service, which covers 20,000 items, for a fee of £3.95. It will force other retailers to offer new delivery options and boost customer service or risk losing sales.
Amazon has already responded by extending its Prime Now service, which delivers items in just one hour to many parts of London and Birmingham.
Customers can choose one of four delivery slots – 7am-10am, 10am-1pm, 2pm-6pm and 7pm-10pm.
Orders placed in the evening will be delivered the next day between 7am-10am or 10am–1pm.
Online shoppers will also have the option of collecting items from Argos stores on the same day.
Argos chief executive John Walden said: 'We are revolutionising online shopping. Customers can continue to shop with us in the traditional ways if they choose to.
It is if you are impetuous like me and simply count the seconds and pace up and down waiting for some new thing to arrive. Apparently Amazon were saying order and we'll have it at your door in an hour. Wow, they would have time to even come in for a cup of tea wouldn't they.
