On 27 October, it’s time to celebrate National Black Cat Day. Why do black cats need a day of recognition, you might ask. Well, due to the colour of their fur, these beautiful felines often have a harder time being homed than their multi-coloured friends. In fact, black or black-and-white cats usually spend a week longer in care before finding a family to take them home. And we want to change this.
The curse of superstition
Throughout history, black cats have had a mixed reception. While some cultures revered them as omens of good luck, others were less welcoming. Puritans, for example, imagined witches could turn themselves into black cats, meaning poor black moggies had a fairly unpleasant time in New England, America. Sailors, on the other hand, would often insist on a black cat when choosing a feline travelling companion, believing they’d bring protection and good luck.
The legacy of all this confusion is that, to this day, black cats are adopted less often than their colourful siblings.
Black is beautiful
But whether it’s a sleek, panther-like cat or a hardy and affectionate farmhouse moggy, the reality is that black cats are as loving and lovable as any other type. What’s more, their rich charcoal coat creates a strikingly beautiful contrast with their typically vivid amber, copper or green eyes.
Black cat awareness
As feline lovers, we wanted to give all abandoned or stray cats the chance to find a loving home. So, backed by thousands of like-minded people, the UK’s first ever Black Cat Awareness Day – as it was then known – took place on 27 October 2011.
The campaign raised awareness of the many homeless black cats in Cats Protection care – and people’s apparent reluctance to adopt them. Attracting support from celebrity cat lovers, including Twiggy Lawson and Samantha Fox, the online campaign was so successful that its Twitter hashtag became the third most-talked about subject among UK Twitter users – even overtaking Justin Bieber.
In subsequent years, National Black Cat Day has seen people share their rescued black cat selfies and stories on Facebook, send in videos of black and black-and-white cats getting up to mischief and contribute to an impressive Instagram collage of the UK’s adorable dusky felines.
My late black cat was very loving. I deliberately chose another black and this one is sweet natured as well. I have heard that this is a trait of black cats but I'm not sure it is true.
Veterinary scientists have found a link between the colour of a cat's fur and its tendency to show aggressive behaviour towards humans, study shows Found calico cats are 'significantly more aggressive' than other types Having looked at 1,274 cats, found ideal pet is a black, grey, white or tabby
Alf's not bothered. Every day is a tabby cat day in his world. This morning Baby Tink was made to get up at 5.30 to let Alf into his room. Alf wouldn't stop wailing until he was let in. And getting a 25 year old up at that time takes some doing lol.
I've had most "flavours" of cat over the years. We had an all white one that was an absolutely beeswax. And a ginger and white that used to have funny fits. And a calico who was a moody mare. Oddly the calico was an absolute dream with Baby Tink when he really was a baby. I was worried about her but she loved him.
I'm always drawn to tabbies but that's because most of the lovely cats we had as kids were tabbies.
We took in a black cat that was hanging around the house. We named her Cleo & she was an absolute basket case. We persevered for two years but finally I had to take her to the Cats Protection League because 24 who was only small then, was so terrified of her. They housed her in grounds set aside for anti-social/ feral cats. Of course I knew nothing about her background. She could have been dropped on her head for all I know and her nastiness could have been down to abuse.
Sadly I think cats can be bad tempered. Like people I suppose but also there is quite a small window in which to "tame" and socialise a cat. And if they go beyond that you haven't got much hope.
My boys were both tams when we got them but particularly Harvey wasn't friendly. They're naturally very gentle but if their temperament had been different I think Harvey would always have been a bit wild. I have had to work really had to turn him into the complete and utter pudding he is today. It took me years to be able to get him to sit on my lap. And even now he won't sit on anyone but me.
Often a cat's bad behaviour is actually fear or survival instinct. Harvey, for instance, still tries to bury his food if he leaves any. That's a really wild basic survival instinct. He also doesn't like to sleep in the open, even in the house. He's usually hidden under the quilt or behind the sofa.
A study suggests black and white cats and tortoiseshell and white cats are the most likely to get stroppy, while tabbies are among those more likely to purr nicely
Black and white cats are most aggressive whilst a tabby is more likely to purr along nicely, according to a study which suggests the colour of a pet could reveal the likelihood that furs will fly.
Researchers questioned more than 1,200 cat owners about the everyday interactions of their pet.
My cousin in Canada had an all white cat which was a complete psycho. It was so bad that the vet would only treat it in the back of the car, and everyone involved was in protective clothing like beekeepers lol!
A while back the vet wanted to take photos of Alf's teef for a case study. I'll just go and get another vet she said. What for I said. To hold his mouth open she said. Like this I said. There was Alf, me holding his gob open, wondering why his gob was open. She ran for the camera sharpish lol
I couldn't do that to Harve without having him in a head lock but no protectuve clothing is ever required with either of my two.
A friend of mine took in a black fluffy feral kitten after his mother died and he was being attacked by other feral cats in the area. He was a minuscule, hissing, spitting ball of fluff when I first met him and confined to the bathroom until he settled in.
He lived to the ripe old age of 28 and was the sweetest natured cat I've ever known. RIP Ari.
Don't ask me what I think of you, I might not give the answer that you want me to.
I've had 3 cats - a grey one who needed garden gloves to brush him, a grey and white one who was an absolute dream to groom and the most sweetest nature and now I have a white cat with a grey tail, face and 3 big grey spots on his body who is getting better at being groomed and is quite independent of anyone ... All different natures
