Quite right Y. it's easy to make pronouncements without considering the whole picture. What someone gets paid is what they are worth to the business. So many people on the sidelines (no pun intended) benefit. A popular player means more viewers, more ticket sales, more team shirts sold etc When I had the bar, people would sometimes say things like "50p for a glass of lemonade? I could buy a bottle for that" to which I would reply " why not party in Tesco then?" My wage bill was huge, as was the cost of cellaring and deliveries etc.

I get that too - I skinned a family out of £14 to get to Robin Hood's Bay from Whitby recently (admittedly expensive) - "I'd be better off getting a taxi" was the comment, my reply "get a (fecking) taxi then"...
I’m comparing the “cost” of football to other sports which, in my opinion, are just as important. It’s just as well that we all have different viewpoints on things because, otherwise, life would be boring. I am however sticking to my feelings about the money involved in football. It’s a shame that the vast amounts of money involved can’t be used elsewhere.
I understand what you mean T and of course an opinion is an opinion and differs between people
What I cant see is how it would be good to see the money from football being used for what may be perceived as better causes as the money put into football is only put into it because it is football
The same could be said for Hollywood block buster movies raking in billions for a few people pouncing about pretending to be someone else for 90 minutes or a head lining band or singer making millions from doing something they love, its all relative
If the fans are willing to pay daft prices to watch a game, which pays, along with sponsorship from other big companies for these massive fees then so be it
You are right with your perception Yorko of course, but the above sums it up for me. I can't understand the fans being happy to be ripped off for tickets, kits etc, just to watch a ball being kicked up and down a patch of grass lol!
Golf and tennis is just as bad, but at least they play all year and matches go on for hours/days/weeks.
I feel the same about the multi millionaires, who rake in money by doing very little, as I do about the football clubs who fork out millions. If they have that amount of money I would prefer them to put it towards better causes like health, charities, the less privileged etc etc.
You do speak a lot of sense, Y, and I always respect your point of view but I just feel that it’s the “fat cats” who benefit while others struggle from day to day. Thankfully I’m not someone who does struggle although I certainly don’t have millions in the bank.
Don't get me wrong T I can get as angry as the next person about the division of wealth (and have done on here more than once, even to the point of someone leaving us who took it personally)
I am not what would be considered well off in monetary terms but have enough and fingers crossed won't have to struggle going forward (though the past is a different story in my case). My gripe would lie in 2 places if I had to pin it down. One would be multi millionaire company owners and "celebrities" who manage to use various loopholes to avoid tax and the second would be the thousands of people turning up on our shores in rubber boats and fraudulently claiming to need asylum when in reality a large amount of them are just coming here because we let everyone in and provide for them whilst our own go hungry and sleep on the street
That sort of shit is totally unacceptable in my book
I agree 100% with you, Y, about the multi millionaire company owners and “celebrities” who manage to avoid the tax for which they are liable. I guess I’d class some of the premier football clubs under the banner of multi millionaire companies.
Don’t get me started on the thousands turning up on our shores. Wasn’t one of the reasons that people voted to leave the EU was so we had control of our borders? Well that’s failed. Even though we’ve given millions to the French to ensure that the “asylum” seekers don’t cross the channel they’re coming in their droves. We should get a refund!
They are being picked up by Border Control in the main but this is a different issue to being in the EU and having open borders
These people have been arriving for years (pre Brexit) but yes the numbers have been rising. We are their ultimate destination and at least people are being processed, its just a pity we have to spend the time and money due to the long and dragged out processes.
And of course there are many lefty do gooders lining up to support them, we cant just turn the boats around and send them back can we. Some if not all of the responsibility lies with the half a dozen other countries they are passing through on their way here
The Turks are receiving hefty sums of EU money to look after them and to stop the people smugglers. In fact, they are encouraging them, taking the money and laughing in the EU's face. Agreed, they still haven't been admitted to the EU but they are enjoying many of the perks of membership, regardless.Sending as many refugees to Greece who can neither afford them, or cope, is just one big game. The refugees/migrants don't want to be in Greece, there is nothing here for them and they have turned certain places into no-go areas.
We do seem to have strayed from the topic of football though...
It's a great pity the right of free speech isn't based on the obligation to say something sensible.
