Parsnips are easy but they almost need the opposite ground to sprouts. Parsnips need a fine soft soil. Sprouts need a very firm soil. I have to really firm the ground and stake the plants to be able to grow decent sprouts.
Broccoli can be temperamental but again you need quite a firm soil. You do for most brassicas. If you like it, the sure fire winner is kale. You can pick kale every week or two for months.
I usually buy fresh brussels and broccoli etc,, but this year my son and ex (who are descending on me for Christmas dinner this year - we take turns) did the shopping for me. I think they were concerned that I might fall down and flatten the turkey as walking is a little tricky at the moment - pre knee replacement op.)
When my son rang this evening, he excitedly told me that they'd picked up some (frozen) brussels with bacon to go with the rest of the Christmas food. Sounds a tad odd to me, but hey ho. (or should that be 'hey ho, ho, ho.' ) eating
How about buying some fresh Toril, and saving the frozen ones til you have your op and perhaps can't get out for a while?
They are alright as a standby, especially if you turn them into bubble and squeak - not sure if that works with the bacon though
It's not so much the fact that they are frozen ...... it's the fact that they have bacon in them and I've not heard of that combination before. I do prefer fresh veg but I never boil frozen veg for hours so hopefully they'll still be firm and 'unmushy' (if that's a word. )
I've got to go to the local shops on Wednesday for milk (I don't take it in any drinks so buy it infrequently, but the ex does like milk in his tea so I'll treat him as it's Christmas ) and if they have any fresh brussels I'll pop those in the basket too ....... just incase.
I don't drink milk either and neither does Baby Tink. My ex is coming for Christmas Day but I don't need to worry. He drinks his tea and coffee black. I only have to worry if I've got tea in as we don't drink it and Mr Tink only drinks earl grey so I sort that by buying him a tin of Williamson's tea as a gift lol.
