Toss a coin, keeping Corbyn would have the same effect - Catch 22
No, keeping him wins a vital Labour seat (we can deal with dumping him later remember). As an Independent, he would win his constituency but cost Labour that seat. Every Labour vote is essential to the cause of dumping the bloody Tories. You know it makes sense.
Labour’s National Executive Committee (NEC) approved a motion today proposed by Sir Keir Starmer with 22-12 votes in favour.
The motion did not mention the allegations of anti-Semetism against Mr Corbyn, which he has denied. However, Ed Milliband told the BBC this morning that the motion is -
"about one thing, which is about Jeremy Corbyn’s reaction to the EHRC report on antisemitism and his refusal to apologise for that reaction. That is the background of this. I don’t think there’s any mystery about that."
So what's the future for Corbyn?
Starmer’s decision to escort Corbyn into the political wilderness now begs the question of how the former leader might react. We are in uncharted territory; never before in modern British politics has a former leader been kicked out of the party they once marshalled with such relative haste. It leaves Corbyn with plenty of options — as his legacy and political project hangs in the balance.
Sir John Curtice has suggested that Jeremy Corbyn would find it "very, very difficult" to win as an independent in Islington North.
Sir John told GB News: "It’s such a safe seat that the irony of that is that Mr Corbyn has to get a very large proportion of the vote to have a good chance of defeating the Labour candidate. I’m sure he will do creditably but the history of independent candidates trying to hang on to their seats shows it is a very, very difficult to do."
But what I meant was he has a huge and loyal following in Islington - he might cause an upset.
If you are saying you would want the Labour candidate to lose, that doesn't help Labour win, and what kind upset would you want Corbyn to cause as an Independent?
In view of the ongoing struggle that any government will face to bring the country back to prosperity over the next 5-10 years, even if the war in Ukraine is resolved, what would further upset and distraction achieve? Even running as an Independent, the knowledge of him out to cause the government as much angst as possible will deter many people from voting Labour.
Starmer had no choice but to prevent him from representing Labour, but as previously said it is now a Catch 22 situation. Should he get elected and decide to cause as much chaos as possible within the party, shame on him. When the chips are down, the country comes first, not internal squabbling, we've had enough of that with the current government. On the plus side, if he is elected along with Labour, they will be able to add him to the 5 years of whinging we will hear about not being able to conduct their manifesto due to previous government failures, as is the norm following elections.
If you are saying you would want the Labour candidate to lose, that doesn't help Labour win, and what kind upset would you want Corbyn to cause as an Independent?
I wasn't saying that at all, I was saying it might be possible for Corbyn to win his constituency as an Independent. I never said that was what I wanted, the "upset" would be the fact he had taken the seat from Labour.
