Mr Moody makes a good point about the time you drink. I finish work at 5pm so I make my last about 3.30. I never have anything later than that. I suppose that could make a difference?
I've slept so much better since I cut down. I still used to be drinking tea at 9pm

Your system probably gets used to a routine, so if you never take caffeine after a certain time, it doesn't come as such a shock if you finish your intake earlier as you don't take it late in the day normally, if that makes sense.
Personally I'm not happy if I don't have two coffees before starting work. It happened the other day actually, on an early shift, I was a bit late in so didn't get my second fix as I normally would. By lunchtime I was gagging for it.
Just had my 4th, I might make it my last today now this thread has been bumped.
I never found too much caffeine an issue. Never kept me awake but if I couldn't get caffeine I was in trouble. I don't drink tea or coffee so back then (early 90s) if I went to a conference or a meeting then there was no chance for me to get a cold bubbly caffeine shit. Honest to god I used to carry pro plus and paracetamol to shift the headache I knew would hit by lunchtime. Or keep it at bay. I've been known to resort to a combo of pro plus, paracetamol and red bull when desperate.
I knew what the problem was but it took me a while to work out I really needed to kick it. Now I can take or leave caffeine. On a day to day basis I have none but if I go out and have a couple diet cokes or more it doesn't affect me at all.
Mr Tink is very sensitive to caffeine. If he has 3 coffees one day and none the next he's in trouble. He has to try and keep his intake on an even keel. Much as I've told him he needs to kick it, he just can't. Wimp! lol.
I drink 3 very large mugs of coffee a day with cream and cinnamon.I can drink one just before bed and it doesn't bother me. For years, I drank tea, as well, builder strength but I rarely touch it now, just never seem to fancy it any more. I drink vast amounts of water too, rarely anything else. I don't know if I am addicted to caffeine as I have never tried to give it up.
It's a great pity the right of free speech isn't based on the obligation to say something sensible.
