Because they have a music sheet, different from the normal ones, which gives the different notations of rhythms and drum beats etc. I only know because a friend of my son's years ago showed me what he had been learning in his drum lessons. It was quite different from the music we read to play the keyboards.
I suppose the drummer is (in a band) the most important part, holding that beat together throughout the song. The rest of the instruments work around that beat.
I don't think you could learn to play the drums properly if you didn't have natural rhythm - as I understand it, and I think Y will confirm it, drummers and bass players work very closely together to provide the backbone of tunes.

Kenney Jones is another exceptional drummer but, sadly, always in the shadow of Keith Moon who wasn't nearly as good - imho - or in the band for anywhere near as long, obvs......
