They've been in our Tesco for a long time, but I wouldn't trust myself. As it is, I've been known to put my stuff in someone stranger's trolley. I hate self-service check-outs in supermarkets & won't use them either. I cringe when that moronic voice tells me "Unexpected item in the bagging area"
They've had them in Sainsburys for years, but it can be a pain when you get to the self scan checkout and their cash till computer randomly picks you for a complete re-scan! Out comes everything that you've carefully packed in bags .....and start all over again. Can't be bothered these days!
We have it in the Alpha-Beta supermarket here, we love it! Yes, it's a pain when you get caught up in a random check but it is still quicker than going to the normal cash desks and suffering the yelling and pushing which is par for the course, here. They still get Greeks demanding to go through the self-scan, even though it is clearly marked, and in a different part of the store so Security generally hover around that area.
It's a great pity the right of free speech isn't based on the obligation to say something sensible.
Waitrose have been doing it for many years. I’ve never tried it as I don’t trust myself with new technology and, ultimately, I fear these things will be doing people out of jobs.
My friend loves the scan and go, I don't fancy it so not tried it myself. The whole point of it is the speed but they obviously need to rescan your shopping a few times to ensure you're honest and what's the betting it'd be when you had a full trolley and you were in a hurry!
People who are wrong are just as sure they're right as people who are right, the only difference is they're wrong

Remember when petrol stations had attendants?
Our petrol stations all have attendants. We will do the usual absent - minded thing when we arrive in the u.k and sit on The forecourt waiting to be filled up and have our windscreens washed before we remember that it is all DIY. Poo.....

Once when Mr FP was on business in Australia he wanted me to drive his car occasionally. I went to the petrol station to put some diesel in and couldn’t open the petrol flap. I tried texting him to ask how to do it but it was , of course, the wrong time of day. Then I had a brainwave and remembered our caretaker’s wife had the same company car so I texted him and found out what to do. It was some stupid thing about having to either have the car locked or unlocked for the flap to open up.
I love scan as you shop, it's the main reason I till shop at Tesco, none of our nearest Sainsburys have it, although maybe on the 18th October when the new one finally opens after 3-4 years of construction may have the option. I hope so.
Being able to pack your bags while you shop and leave the store avoiding unpacking/packing at the tills is a godsend. I was nervous I might miss scanning something, but you soon get used to it and you can see the last 6-8 items on the scanner so its easy to keep checking, you can also see exactly how much you are spending. I did get checked quite regularly at the beginning, but only on odd occasions now. They only pick half a dozen random items from your bags so it does take more than a minute. If you buy certain items such as a joint of meat or fillet steak, the scanner tells you to keep it available as its electronically tagged.
Annoyingly, I had a habit of coming home with tagged clothes a couple of times, because I didn't think after scanning and packed them. The odd thing was, they tripped the alarm when I entered the store taking them back to get the tag removed lol!
You can scan coupons when paying , you can pay with cash, the only thing you can't do is get cash on your card.
