In my experience, Toms are much more likely to enjoy being petted than female cats. Vasilli likes to fling his paws round our neck and nuzzle and as for Ashley...his two nicknames are Eoin McLove (fromthe character in Father Ted)or just 'cuddles' as he constantly begs to be picked up and made a fuss of. Maybe females are generally more wary as, in the wild, they have to be in protect mode, worrying about he safety of their kittens and then, when the kittens are weaned, they have to harden their heart and push them away to make them independent.
As with children, much of it depends on those vital first few weeks of life and their circumstances then.
