I've sent a photo to the Melbourne Museum in the hope that they can tell me what species it is. This is the first time I've ever seen such a big moth.

It's about the size of your hand, and this one seems to have taken a dump down the wall. O_o

This is a Wattle Goat moth. They have a wingspan of around 10cm and are found on the east coast of Australia, from Queensland down to Tasmania.
