Discovered a ready-to-fledge dove in a nest high in the garden tree yesterday. I had looked for a nest a few weeks ago after hearing the doves, but couldn't see any sign of a nest. The pigeons and doves obviously love this tree, despite its proximity to the house.
There was a first for us yesterday, a creature we had never seen before running at the base of the wall ivy. Goggle images revealed it was a short tailed weasel. The waterboard have been cutting back the vegetation along the river so I assume he was disturbed and wandered into our garden.
It stared right back at me yesterday. It looks sweet but it's deadly for voles, mice and small birds. "They will defend themselves against pet dogs and cats using their sharp teeth. Like most wildlife, the pests may also bite people if threatened or trapped." I've been reading up on them. I've warned Oz and Ruby but they are on sentry duty next to the ivy.
You wouldn't think they are so cute if one had wandered into your house and got trapped in a cupboard with the cat. The cat won, eventually, and it took about 6 weeks before the skunk-like smell disappeared.

I can't believe I didn't know this. I always assumed the lumps of moss from the roof littering the side paths were due to the rain and wind this time of year. However, since using my new mini lounge when cold, I have a "birds eye view" of next doors roof. Found myself watching magpies and crows scuttling around on the roof loosening lumps of damp moss and chucking them off! Presumably to get to grubs underneath.
And the blackbirds and sparrows rummage around in the debris in the gutters for the insects too which usually results in some of it being thrown onto the floor, bless them
People who are wrong are just as sure they're right as people who are right, the only difference is they're wrong
When Himself went out to lock his car and shut the garage door he glimpsed something low to the ground dash between the drive gateposts, racing along the lane tonight. Very fleeting so he couldn't positively identify it. I hope it's not that weasel.
