A cat from many years ago was a hunter. He would come in with live mouse and go straight to his food bowl, scoff what was in it with one paw firmly on his victim.
I hate this instinct in cats. Almost every day Ruby catches something. At the weekend she sat over one of the drains for ages and when Jones lifted the grill there was a little mouse on the sill, dead unfortunately. She no longer brings them close. As soon as she claps eyes on me she runs with it. I suppose it's a good thing she's got short legs otherwise she's get the birds as well.
My soppy cat sits in the garden and observes the birds - they know he will not chase after them and are usually within a few feet of him. The dog is the same and ignores them
Our first cat Howell never caught anything, but he did turn up with a mummified baby rat one day. Birds got on his nerves so he would eat the bread we put out.
Thankfully none of my cats have ever brought live or deceased animals into the house.
However, the first cat I had, when I was married, was called Pogle and he used to bring rubber bands into the house, presumably ditched by the postman.
Touch wood Saffy hasn't brought anything into the house for a couple of years which I'm much relieved about I hope now she's eight she's beginning to grow out of it, having said that she soon chases off any birds who have the audacity to trespass into her garden. Harry caught a mouse the other day and was playing with it on the lawn, not so sure it was so keen though but thankfully he doesn't seem to bring them in anymore, years of me shouting 'out, out' as loud as I can has obviously paid off!
People who are wrong are just as sure they're right as people who are right, the only difference is they're wrong
I have a sliding mesh fly door for use when the patio door is open. The doors are closed at the moment because it's tipping down. A couple of minutes ago I heard some scratching on the mesh which I assumed was Boots, when I looked up and it was my little visitor from the other night scrambling up the mesh on the inside. He ran onto the top of fly door behind the runner as I got to the door. I opened the door and gently slid the fly door along, and as soon as it reached the opening, the mouse leapt down onto the patio, rubbed his nose and he was off!
It's been two days and I was a bit concerned it might have died under the freezer, which would not have been good. I should add, Boots was zedding it in the spare bedroom and is none the wiser.
He spent a lot of time sleeping close to the freezer, but started to lose interest yesterday and was sleeping on the bed. The mouse must have only come out yesterday, as the doors were open the first day. Boots obviously hadn't harmed it at all.
He's not had much practice with mice I think he just wanted to show it to me lol!
One of those @itchy unmentionable creatures decided to die on the path between the house & the garage. It was a whopper. No sign of injury so I think it was poisoned. Ruby took the long way round rather than pass it.
