"A smile is the prettiest thing you can ever wear".
Reminded me of my lovely mum. As a shy child who always felt more ugly duckling than swan, I used to fuss about what to wear. She used to say my smile was the best thing I could ever wear.
Later as I grew in confidence, into my teens and beyond, she still used to tell me to smile. And actually now I'm a really "smiley" person. I used to love it when my mum used to say "with a smile like that you can stop traffic".
Its a wonderful gift to give your child isn't it? Confidence and happiness. I'm a lucky daughter.
You were indeed. My maternal grandfather - the only one I had - was so miserable that my mother was determined to be quite the opposite & taught us to be the same. No matter how dark & miserable you feel, there is always someone worse off than you. She couldn't abide self criticism either. She'd say 'Why point out your faults to others? They might not have noticed but for your drawing attention to them.'

Very true Mim and Tinks. I can't stand the half empty philosophy at all. That's not to say I am overfond of those who constantly blow their own trumpet at other people's expense.
I think, as a child, you don't really know any different. So as long as you're in a stable family home, whatever that looks like, you're OK. Its only when you look back that you realise how good, bad or indifferent that was. Please god let it not have been truly bad for anyone.

That's a lovely sentiment in the card, OurTinks. I think some of us have had rough childhoods. The turning point is realising that you don't want to perpetuate it nor end up with a similar spouse.

It is a wonderful gift and very sweet that you caught that card as a reminder... Like the message was there and meant for you to see when you did.
