Had my first one yesterday. Well the second part of my first one. My god alive what a hellish procedure that is. Half way through I just wanted the effing thing out. Fortunately there was only a tiny threat of infection which was dealt with last month so I haven't been in agony with the tooth but I am now. I feel like I have been kicked in the jaw.
It may make you chuckle but I do have quite small jaws and teeth and both my upper and lower jaw feels bruised from being forced open. The clip thing he used to isolate the tooth broke at one point making my gums bleed and he was worried it had chipped another tooth. The skin in the corner of my mouth is very red and sore.
My usual chipmunk cheeks are imbalanced with my right cheek being even more puffed up than normal.
He didn't finish it yesterday as he quite rightly felt I had more than had enough so I have a temporary filling that can be replaced in January. £500 so far and counting. I did, however, manage to get through it without a full on panic attack, crying or being sick. I could feel the panic really starting to build but at that point he said "right, we're on the home straight" and I managed to hold on in there.
I have never had a root canal done before and I hope never to have another.
That sounds really unpleasant. Hope everything settles down soon, Tinks.
My dentist gave me a tip about how to avoid sore lips and corners of mouth during any dental procedure - apply a liberal coating of Blistex before and after your visit. It works.
Don't ask me what I think of you, I might not give the answer that you want me to.
That sounds horrendous Tinks, you have my sympathies. I wonder if all that messing has touched a nerve so to speak, and that's causing all the current pain. But it should ease off in time, hopefully soon.
Funny, but I think we all recall our worst visits to the dentist. Mine was a few years ago going for a simple filling as one cusp of a back tooth had come away. I won't say too much at this time, but I had several more very painful visits to the dentists over the next two months before they agreed to remove the bl...dy tooth!
Having assisted at many RCT's, it's not something I'd want done, only because I gag very easily, and I dont think I'd be able to keep my mouth open that long.

Ibuprofen is helping thank you I'm hoping the swelling will go down today. It is feeling more comfortable with the pills.
It should never be done in one visit Tink. The tooth needs to be opened and dressed, and then left for a few weeks for any infection to be completely gone. The last thing you need is for there to be any infection under the filling. Sometimes it takes a couple of visits for the infection to be completely cleared, before the final filling is done. Just be aware that root filled teeth are more brittle, so don't try cracking any nuts with your noshers

You did well Tinks. Sounds like your dentist knows what your threshold is. My worst experience wasn't root canal but when an impression was being taken or something ( Cogs will know) and I had to keep my mouth open for an absolute age and it made feel absolutely dreadful I thought I would have to get the dentist to stop. I felt such a baby.
My dentist is lovely. He's very laid back and I trust him. Despite the cost of being private I wouldn't go anywhere else. I might moan about the cost but I'm quite happy really.
And he is very good. I think he understands my phobia better than I do. He knows that for me its really about getting me in and out that ruddy chair as fast as possible but he knows not to let me out of the chair until he's done. Which I think is why he will risk fillings without anaesthetic and doesn't make me go and sit in the waiting room whilst the anaesthetic takes. If he's got me in the chair I'm there until he's finished. He didn't send me to the hygienist either. I think he thinks if he does any cleaning himself then at least it'll get done. Not sure he trusts me to turn up to the hygienist lol.
I'm afraid I'd be gagging and having palpitations with all of these procedures.
I wouldn't not go to the dentist regularly - couldn't avoid it even if I wanted to because ours is a good mate - but I can't keep my mouth open for long either. Seems so unlikely, doesn't it..........
