There is mention in another thread about the Chinese eating bats and porcupines but, seriously, what is the most unusual thing you have ever eaten?
I'm not terribly adventurous with food - egg and chips girl, me - and I suppose the strangest thing I've ever eaten is a soft shelled crab. There is no way to separate the crab from the shell so you eat it all and it is like chewing your fingernails with your fingers still attached. Not for me.
Don't ask me what I think of you, I might not give the answer that you want me to.
I'm not very adventurous. I can't tolerate spicy food anymore. In fact, there are many foods I can't tolerate anymore. No one told me I had eaten octopus a few years back. Just as well. I would have decked them for fooling me. I could not bring myself to swallow oysters either. I did try, but ... As for jellied eels -Don't talk! I think the worst dish I was ever presented with was fish soup when we were in Porto Venere, Italy. The fish head was the crowning glory.
I don't think I have eaten anything terribly adventurous but it all depends what you mean by that. I will happily tuck into anything which is not slimy so no okra, aubergine, birds-nest soup etc. Some of my favourite foods are octopus, kokoretsi, little fish eaten complete with heads and such-like, which make some of our friends shudder.
It's a great pity the right of free speech isn't based on the obligation to say something sensible.
I'm not that adventurous, but I've liked and loathed certain foods in my time. I love curries, hot up to and including Vindaloo, but nothing extreme like the Bangalore Phall or the Naga Chilli. Best curry ever was not at a restaurant but at an Indian person's home, not especially hot but more interestingly and delicately spiced, it was fantastic.
Thai food can be good, not the street food - skewered rats and that sort of thing which we saw aren't going to get me drooling - but one Thai curry at the hotel was awesome. They added a dip which looked watery with bits of floating chilli in, and it was fiery hot and fish based.
As above, can't do slimy rubbery stuff - I once tried squid and it was revolting. Liv's slimy shellfish I pass by, I've never had an oyster or a mussel. Crab meat is fine but removed from the shell - I think that's more a "can't be arsed" thing.
I had a paella in Majorca once, it made me violently sick for three days. I suspect a dodgy prawn, but I never tried another paella for many years.
If your squid was rubbery, mr M, it must have been badly prepared and cooked. It should be soft with a crispy coating if it is Kalamari or melt in the mouth if grilled or stuffed but, I guess, once bitten.......if you’ll pardon the pun....
I used to think I didn't like Kalamari until I tried some made at home by a friend - he's a brilliant cook, so I trusted him and thoroughly enjoyed it. He also makes the best crab cakes with sweet chilli sauce I have ever eaten.
Mr Nell will eat anything - mostly without complaint - but he loathes trifle.
