I don't like the self service tills and don't use them unless I've only got a couple of things or the queues are too long and I'm desperate. I always have problems with items not scanning or the blooming thing keeps saying 'remove item from bagging area' so it takes longer to do the shopping due to waiting multiple times for an assistant to come over and sort it out, I don't think I've ever used one without any hassle. My local Tesco's superstore has recently installed more self service and scanning tills which now make up about half of the checkouts if they continue down this route I will seriously take my business elsewhere
