On a whim I decided I wanted to make strawberry jam today, so I pootled off to Tesco.
I thought I would give the self-scanning a go as I was only doing a small shop, loved it! The best bit is packing in your own bags as you shop, eliminating the conveyor belt and packing at the till. It requires a re-think on going round the store to make sure you buy your heavy stuff first, but it won't take long to get use to it.
Funny, I didn't notice the annoying beep-beep of others scanning as I was concentrating on doing mine lol!
In Sains its called Fast Track. Same thing though. Its brill. I've been doing it since it first came out and once you're used to it, it saves time too.
Just be aware that every so often they will do a rescan. So you end up having to unpack your shopping for then to check you've scanned it properly. Its just a bit of a nuisance when it happens but the rescans get less frequent as you go on.

Many years ago they had this at my local Safeway which then became a Morrisons. It was much quicker for me as 32 and 30 were not into supermarket queues as under 10s.It was stopped , they said, because they were losing too much money on it. I occasionally use the smaller basket one at Tesco but have never done a big trolley shop since the demise of Safeway.
I had to be scanned as it was my first shop, but she only did 3-4 items. I asked what happens if you forget to scan something (sooner or later I will get distracted!), the thought terrifies me. Did the alarm sound as you left or something, the assistant said "nothing". There's obviously a lot of trust involved but I daresay, Tesco being Tesco, there are methods of keeping a check on you for a while if you err, especially if it's been more than once.
The less packing/unpacking is a boon to me at the moment.
That would certainly help back up guilt/innocence in a dispute I would have thought. I bet people's demeanour is different if they are actually stealing.
Self Scanners come in handy when you only have a few items and long lines at the regular tills. And should you make a mistake, a friendly employee is right at hand to correct it.
