I've cracked it!

The answer is powder-free latex, worn in hot and humid conditions

As yet, my inadvertent experiment was confined to the hand area only* but the results are extraordinary. Silky smooth, wrinkle-free skin.

*OK, I confess, I was wearing disposable gloves to protect my hands from wallpaper paste yesterday and today but I do now have very soft, smooth mitts! shhh
