Have things got ridiculously out of hand when it comes to hen/stag nights, weddings, etc.?
Call me an old misery, but it seems to me that people are going to ridiculous lengths to out do each other these days. Our best friends daughter and her boyfiend, have been invited to a wedding in Rhodes. It'd cost them a minimum of £1000 each to go, money they can't afford because they're saving up to buy a house, so they've had to decline. The b/f was supposed to be the best man. The couple in question have been living together for ages and have 2 kids.
No one just goes out for the evening for the hen/stag do, they have to go somewhere, and it's usually for a minimum of a long weekend, and apparently the guests have to pay for the hen or stag!
OK, I admit, I'm not one for big weddings, but if you can't afford it, and get yourself in to debt to do it, is it worth it?
I've always told the Coglet if he decides to elope, we won't mind in the least
I agree @incognito, People are landing themselves in debt for thousands of pounds and Im sure that most of them can't afford it and will be paying for the day for years to come
Obviously there are some people who have saved for the occasion but a lot of people are skinting themselves just to keep up with the Jones's

32 and his new bride saved up for their Wedding and had contributions from both sets of in-laws. It was a lovely do but very much more than Mr and Mrs FP had.
Mr Nell's step-nephew-in-law (if there is such a thing) is getting married to a multi-millionaire's daughter soon (no, we aren't invited; just their closest 500 friends and family) and her parents paid for both stag and hen weekends in foreign parts. Fair dos, he owns a football club amongst other things), but what a waste of money.
