Yesterday I had a flyer put through the letter box obviously written by a child offering to do jobs like gardening, housework, cleaning windows etc. Whilst I applaud her wanting to use her spare time to earn extra money during the school holidays I do worry that in this day and age she'd put her name, including the fact she's 13 years old and her mobile phone number on a piece of paper and put it through the doors of strangers. I'm not sure I'd allow my daughter to do that or is it just me?

No, it isn't DD. Unfortunately the world we live in is not safe and I wouldn't let my child put things through the letterboxes of people she doesn't know. Not long after I had told a couple of 10 year old girls who had knocked on my door that as they didn't know me and were alone and that they were putting themselves at serious risk , I was in a supermarket when a voice piped up'" Mummy there's that lady who told us it wasn't safe to knock on strangers' doors."
I live in a very low crime and safe area and although the vast majority of people are trustworthy children can be at risk anywhere but perhaps the parents are intending to 'vet' anyone before she works for them, let's hope so

My friends daughter is older but did something similar for babysitting. the mobile number is her mum's. It doesn't say that but it is. Hopefully that's the case here too.
It does sound irresponsible and perhaps it's because we are much more aware of the dangers now but I was younger than that when I started odd jobs for strangers to get some Brownie and Guide badges.
Hard to believe, I know, but I was a precocious child and probably wouldn't have heeded my mother's warnings - if indeed I even told her what I was up to.......
Don't ask me what I think of you, I might not give the answer that you want me to.
FP's right Mim - you're getting your cubs and brownies mixed up.
Brownie promise was something like:
I promise to do my best, To do my duty to God and The Queen, To help other people every day, Especially those at home.
I can remember how to make a sling and tie a figure of eight bandage to this very day - never had to do it, mind you! - and there's not much call for semaphore these days. LOL
I am sure it would be okay in Daily Chatterings village. I know I have an odd sense of humour. I sometimes made a joke that I was a child in the seventies and nobody interfered with me at all. I was bloody furious. big laugh But I sometimes think it is also bad when they are allowed at Halloween to knock on strangers' doors without a responsible adult?
Neither a Brownie nor a Scout be I LOL My grandfather reckoned we were related to Robert Baden-Powell, but seeing as Rob's mother made up his lineage who knows.
