Just had a phone call from a man in India saying that he was from Microsoft (the usual bollox) and I told him I don't use it. He then asked me what I use, I declined to say. He then went on to ask me if I used Apple, I declined to tell him, he then went on to ask me if I had ever seen an apple tree
I got rid of him eventually but 10 seconds later the same man rang back to say he was ringing from Apple to check my computer LOL
After I stopped laughing he said I had a serious problem with my computer, when I fobbed him off again his parting shot was was follows
I usually ask which computer they mean as we have two laptops, a netbook, a PC and server at Tinker Towers. Then say hold on a tick I'll put you over to Baby Tink he's a Microsoft certified third line technician, he'll know what you mean. The line goes dead suddenly.
I had one of those calls from some fool saying he was from Microsoft and that they had detected that I had a fault with my computer. I'd read about these scams on another forum so decided I'd have a little fun with him (proxy pay back time.) He asked if I had my computer turned on and I said "yes." It wasn't on at all .......... but hey ho.
I pretended to do all the rubbish he was telling me to but I invented problems as I went along. "I've now got a flashing icon" and stuff like that. Fifteen minutes later, when he was beginning to sound a little exasperated I asked him why he was trying to fix my computer for me as I really didn't need his help and that he'd made any problem that I had a lot worse. He insisted I did need help so I said "I really don't because ........... I work in I.T."
He hung up immediately and I waited for the thunderbolt to strike me for telling him a blatant lie. It didn't and hasn't ........ yet.
I'm just grateful that I didn't get the same idiot on the phone (with his lovely parting comment) as Y did.
As soon as I see 'Number Withheld' or 'International' I connect & immediately disconnect. Someone told me they sometimes ring a string of numbers at a time & the first pick-up is the lucky winner. I spoil the string. I'm very suspicious about picking up a call that does display a number that's not local or one I do not recognise. I say nothing & listen. Often the call disconnects with no one uttering a word.

We do not have caller display so I use the answer machine to screen who is calling. The calls disconnect themselves just before the machine picks up - don't know if the shysters machinery can pick up on that.
