I immediately think the worst if the phone rings after a certain time. Having had one of those phone calls that is bad news my heart sinks if it rings late.
We had a call a couple of weeks ago at about 11-30, just as I was nodding off. I woke with heart thumping and went to check the number - withheld, no message left. I couldn't get back to sleep for ages. I know if it was about my dad it would be a sister and they would probably have left a message, but what if it was first born, getting his one phone call, or being beaten up and they nicked his phone or a thousand other scenarios running through my mind? (I didn't want to phone him as he was hopefully asleep with an early morning start!)
The bosses of companies who make those calls should be strung up by their whatnots.
I've had two of those late night calls with tragic news and it sticks with you forever. As you say EarlyBird, if you know your kids are out or your husband is away it makes your heart do flip flops. Trouble is, most of these calls are recorded so keeping a whistle next to the bed is of no use.
