I was thinking this morning there will no doubt be a problem with the rise of well-meaning groups to help people in their community at the moment. Those that prey on the elderly will be plotting as I type no doubt.
I had a phone call at 7:30 yesterday morning. The landline never rings, so I answered it in case it was the family. Some idiotic woman told me that my subscription for Prime was due and that I needed to pay the £79 renewal fee.
Two things wrong with that, you stupid woman!!! 1) My subscription is paid by direct debit and 2) I paid it in January.

Well it’s 08:15 on Day 1 of the easing of lockdown and the scammers are up and about- just had the Prime Video call! Life is definitely beginning to go back to pre lockdown. Shysters!
I got an email this morning, in my junk mail box, telling me that I had underpaid for my licence and that I owed them £11.40.
Unfortunately for the scammers, I paid for my licence a few weeks ago (automatic direct debit) and have a copy of the licence to prove it. I guess just over £11 isn’t much but if loads of people click on the link the scammers will be on a financial roll.
I got a text about 10 minutes ago. My tax code has changed several times recently so I could be due for a rebate and the text was sent to my second phone which is the one I use for business contacts and orders. I have rung HMRC to double check as I’ve never received a text from them before. They’ve confirmed it’s a scam, which you probably all knew that anyway, but just incase .....
I had a letter last week supposedly from HMRC saying I was due a tax rebate, in it was a link to go to to get it paid directly into your bank. To say I was sceptical would be an understatement, the link looked legit but rather than use it I did my own check via the Customs and Excise's website and searched for tax rebates and lo and behold it was genuine! I can't remember the last time I had a rebate, since retiring I've had two occasions when I've owed them money so you could have knocked me down with a feather, now I've just got to decide what to spend my £23 on
People who are wrong are just as sure they're right as people who are right, the only difference is they're wrong
They sent me a letter when I owed them tax. 😳 They’d botched up my tax code but they blamed the Teachers’ Pension lot. 🙄 Sadly that letter was genuine. They wanted it paid in instalments but I rang them and said I’d pay it in one lot or not at all. They accepted payment. A month later they changed my tax code again so I wonder if the right hand really knows what the left hand’s doing,
It was the fact that this tax rebate was mentioned in a text, rather than a letter, that made me pick up the phone this afternoon.
Despite the fact that the notification was in a letter rather than a text or email it's a sign of the times that I was immediately suspicious but as they say better to be safe than sorry!
