The "world's saddest polar bear" has been moved from a Chinese shopping mall and sent back to the ocean park where he was born.
The move is only temporary, however, with the Grandview Aquarium in Guangzhou saying that he would be returned following renovation works.
The mall posted on Chinese social media that it would "await Pizza's return".
Almost a million people have signed a petition to close the aquarium in Guangzhou where Pizza is kept.
What sort of place is a shopping mall to keep a polar bear? The poor thing needs big open spaces to move about, preferably somewhere cold.
I remember years ago seeing a polar bear being kept at Flamingo Land near here. It was in a concrete enclosure with absolutely nothing to do, and was pacing up and down obviously distressed. Thankfully FL has got it's act together now and all it's animals are well kept in conditions suitable for their needs. Sadly I don't think Pizza the Polar Bear will have this luxury to look forward to.
Zoos have agreed not to take any more polar bears in Britain. Quite right too.
When was this Liv , only the Yorkshire Wildlife Park near Doncaster recently opened a special enclosure for polar bears, in 2014.
We've been there and it's a magnificent enclosure, ideal for the four bears they have there.
I do agree ideally they need to be in snowier surroundings, but they're becoming endangered in their natural habitat due to the ice caps melting, so I'm happy as long as they're being treated right.
Liv, I suspect since those articles were written, the plight of the polar bear has got considerably worse. Thankfully most zoos / refuges these days are a lot more suited to the needs of the bears and are necessary to ensure numbers are kept up. Obvs the Chinese mall owners have yet to catch on to this idea.
So it would seem @lewis I remember feeling very sorry for the two Polar bears Bristol zoo used to have. One of them was severely distressed, constantly pacing and swinging it's head. Bristol zoo decided when they died no more bears would kept there.
I hate seeing things like this. I'm all for conservation, but sadly there are too many places with totally unsuitable habitats for the animals. We were recently in Vienna, and I was astounded to see the zoo was named 'best in Europe', we thought it was appalling.

Hope he doesnt get sent back
Sadly I think he will be, the Chinese aren't well known for their compassion over such things.
