Basically, four of their products were deficient in thiamine (vitamin B1)
"We are aware of three cats which, sadly, became seriously unwell four to six weeks after switching to one of the affected products and required veterinary care. All three cats exhibited symptoms of sudden collapse, fitting, widespread twitching and general unsteadiness which are not the classic symptoms of thiamine deficiency."
I feed Ruby with Purina dried cat food & Sheba (wet). I'm researching other wet cat foods as hers has only a 4% meat content.
Encore is a good brand with a high meat content Liv. Harvey tends to eat every scrap. It is expensive but he only has half a tin or half a pouch each mealtime. If I give him more he leaves it so I'm not really being mean.
Yes, I read that was a good brand @tinkerbelle. It's on my list & I'm going to pop along later & check it out. I don't mind paying a bit more for cat food if it is a healthier option and it gets eaten up. I seem to throw a lot out. I went through all this with Meg, but she refused to eat the more expensive brands. I supplement Ruby's diet with chicken if we are eating it, a small amount of raw mince if I'm cooking that and fish if that's on our menu. She's very found of Tuna in Spring water if I open a can for a sandwich.
I was horrified to read that some cat foods have sugar in the recipe.
Alf would eat the pattern off the carpet if he could. He was so easy. Harvey is much more difficult, except that I know what he likes and if you give him what he likes he will eat it and he doesn't go off things. Royal Canin biscuits (not the best in some respects but not the worst either and one many vets recommend) then he like the Encore tins and the newer cat soups in any brand but the key is to give him a bowl of biscuits on tap and a spoonful of wet food twice a day. He actually doesn't eat that much so I'd rather he cleared his plate of a more expensive food than me binning large quantities of cheaper food. He also likes freshly cooked cod or coley and he likes proper prawns but other than that I'm really wasting my time.
So fairly expensive food but in small quantities.
With Alf gone my cat food bills are through the floor. But again Alfie did eat every scrap so I don't really begrudge him larger quantities of cheaper food.
I think Ruby has depleted the mouse/ shrew/ vole population in the area. My neighbour is hoping she'll visit her barn again this summer. I've seen the bodies, but no evidence of anything eaten, but then perhaps I wouldn't if she's consumed some of the evidence.
From the information I've found online, the following brands have been praised Nature's Menu Applaws Bozita Encore All the above are cheaper if ordered online, but there's no point in doing that until I've tried them out on Ruby's taste buds.
The biggest sellers are naturally those advertised on TV, but they do not receive good reviews. Fleix in Jelly is the one that has a sugar content.
Few supermarket brands were rated, the exceptions being Lidl Coshida and Asda in the black pouches.
Does that look like me with my head down the bowl?
No, our Millie has said it's horrible, in cat talk, ie. she literally leaps back in repulsion if we put a plateful down for her. I have to say, even by cat food standards it looks and smells revolting.

Our cats are very discerning , especially Katya, who will turn her nose up at some thing I have wanted to throw out but Mr FP has insisted is still OK.
