Sainsbury's have just brought out a new system where you can either use their scanners or your smartphone. Painfully slow at the minute whilst everyone has a go and no one knows what they're doing at the checkout. Even the check outs are self scan, so you have to scan a barcode to download your shopping on to the till. I'm sure the novelty will wear off and it'll be just the hard core of self scanners left. Of which I'm one! It's marvellous. Saves me about 15 minutes on a normal shop and no longer than a normal shop with a rescan. The longer you do the self scan without errors being picked up on a rescan, the less often you get a rescan.

Don't get me started. On a similar line, we have a new contactless option on the bus to pay with your card or smart phone. It's a bloody nightmare while people are "trying it out". I have to select a special menu for them to use their card or phone, but if they're too slow (especially with the phone), my machine reverts back to cash and a cash ticket comes out. Then I have to go through the procedure of cancelling that ticket and starting again. It's supposed to make things easier, but it doesn't. If there's nowt wrong with the old method of a simple cash payment, why change things?
I'm with you on that, Pinky. I don't even like using the self service thingies. The first time I used one in Tesco an item caused the red light to come on to summon help from one of the staff. That put me right off! Him Ooop North zooms through the self service tills if we've been shopping but if I want to go through a served till he asks for the car keys and goes out to wait for me.
I used it again this week. Much quicker. I think many have tried it and thought oh to hell with that. Quite how you manage when you need a rescan I don't know. I'm sure I'll find out in due course though.
We did once have 3 rescans in a row! We only shop once a week and not always in that particular place, it was just bad luck. Apart from those, only one other time. Even with a rescan it is less bothersome than queueing at the checkout.
It's a great pity the right of free speech isn't based on the obligation to say something sensible.
