The article says they're not protected by any law other than prohibiting cruelty to animals. Letting members of the public cull them would be tantamount to cruelty. They're even difficult to anaesthetise because they're cold blooded, so I can only imagine how they'd meet their end. Most iguanas prefer to be above ground level, as they're arboreal, so how they are compromising foundations etc is beyond me.
At this rate, they'll be telling people to cull other animals that are roaming free .... like raccoons, cats, dogs etc etc.
Toril, they do have underground burrows, possibly to escape from the fiercest heat of the day, but I do recall that we rarely saw them before 3pm when they would emerge and make their way up into the trees.
Don't ask me what I think of you, I might not give the answer that you want me to.
The majority of kinds of iguana do prefer to stay above ground level in trees, although obviously the marine iguanas don't, but I can understand why some might opt for going underground if the foliage cover isn't sufficient in the heat. But, on the whole, they are solitary animals (barring the marine ones) so how a single iguana can be blamed for rocking the foundations is beyond me. There are also a lot of animals who will dig underground, so the fact that they're singling out iguanas only highlights their apparent ignorance.
I used to chat regularly in an international chat room and I was amazed by the number of American women in there who owned a gun. That says it all really, in my opinion. Maybe in this instance, they should train the iguanas to handle a firearm because humans do far more damage to the environment (fracking, building etc etc) than animals do.
As I said initially ....... it's barbaric in my opinion. And there's no way I'd set foot in America or Puerto Rico anyway, for several reasons.
Sorry T, I knew that was close to the bone but I wanted to highlight the great American way. To think leisure activities such as this even exist is horrifying. I'm surprised at Trip Advisor publishing such "reviews" tbh. 🙁
