A year or so ago, someone at work decided to collect all those special edition 50p coins with new designs on the back. This soon expanded to include the £2 coins with similarly different designs, though that becomes an expensive hobby.
At the same time, Mrs M was collecting all the Beatrix Potter 50p coins, and later the Paddington Bear ones. Me, I set to work looking for all the 2012 Olympic Games editions, a thankless task as most have been snapped up and rarely appear in loose change. I do insist on finding mine rather than buying them off E-bay.
Meanwhile many burly Teesside bus drivers can be heard mourning the impossibility of finding the rarest Kew Gardens 50p, or weeping into their teacup over that elusive Flopsy Bunny....
So, does anyone else here collect these, or am I the only saddo?
Here's a few....
Beatrix Potter collection 2016/7/8, minus aforementioned Flopsy Bunny.
Paddington, last year and this year - new St Paul's Cathedral one not yet out.
10/29 Olympics 2012 coins.
A few rare £2 coins, plus the ultra rare "Z" 10p - I've yet to find "A-Y", yet apparently "Z" is the rarest.
I'm afraid I never take any notice of the different coins I get - just keep the £1 and 50p coins in my purse and regularly empty out the smaller denominations into an old Quality Street jar. Just about due for a visit to the bank I think.
Don't ask me what I think of you, I might not give the answer that you want me to.
I do collect £2 coins, but only to save in my meerkat piggy bank 😳. I then take the contents down to the bank. I'm about to take some down tomorrow, but have no idea if any of them are "rare."
But I've just saved your change checker link, Mr. M., so I can rootle through all the coins after my evening meal.
I draw £20 in cash each month to keep in a drawer if needed, quite often it doesn't get touched. Going cashless does mean I don't get £2 coins to save anymore, but it's rare to be given one these days anyway. I think the Royal Mint must be harvesting them ready for the launch of the new ones. I haven't seen a 50p for a while either, I think lots of people must be collecting them like Mr Moody.
