It is a National holiday ~ Clean Monday (Καθαρά Δευτέρα), the start of the Lenten fast. Today, kites are flown and only 'pure' foods are eaten. Usually, famililies would flock to the coast or mountains and fly their kites, then eat a picnic meal or gather in a Taverna. Ironically, after weeks of strong winds, it is unnaturally calm today, as if the weather is colluding with the Government edict to stay at home...

Yes, I would imagine it was, Nellie. There are several religious observances leading up to Lent and they all seem to need crowds of friends and family to participate and they always end up with piles of food, too. The 'lettuce' family that have a weekend/holiday home behind us, arrived on Friday and are still there. They are not supposed to travel from Athens to here but who is going to tell, I despair, as the covid cases are rising, not falling, despite the severity of our lockdowns. They are not going out and about, just tending their fruit and veg and sorting out their terribly overgrown garden which is their pride and joy. I am sure they are no danger to anyone but it's the whole damned principle and the fact that they have travelled from the City where the number of cases is out of control.
