I looked it up and, apart from someone who rings bells 😉, one definition that seems to fit is “a ringer is a contestant who lies about his experience.“ So maybe he’s danced before entering the competition. 🤔

He was in Billy Elliot. Strictly Fans tend to put anyone who has been to Stage School or attended dancing class as ringers but can be very selective as to who they point the finger at and if Layton goes tonight there will be another group saying the voting is racist.

It's also someone who gets a car and fits it with false number plates from another identical car, maybe yours, so they can then use that car for illegal activities (robberies, dangerous driving, that sort of thing) and you'd get the rap. That's why you see many cars advertised for sale with their number plates fuzzed out.
I decided against looking for an explanation on the internet. In my experience words like that tend to take you places that you'd rather not go.........
I wonder if Nigel's injury is a a tactical one? He didn't seem to be a judges' favoured one.
