Blooming typical, Mr Cog spent the afternoon upstairs sorting out photos for another photo book, came downstairs, and said the boiler's not on. So after fiddling for a while trying to get it to fire up, we had to admit defeat. I rang the man who usually services our boiler, and not surprisingly, he's inundated and can't come He's given us the number of a company he knows, so we'll have to call them in the morning. Fortunately, we've got underfloor hearing in the orangery, and a log burner in the sitting room, so we won't freeze, and our cooking is all electric, so we won't starve either buts it's a right Bugga!
I just hope it's not terminal, the man who usually looks after it is old school and doesn't charge the earth, just drinks his own body weight in tea and talks for England
When mine was having problems I used British Gas they have a set price for the first 30 mins which wasn't too expensive but the engineer that came said it takes almost that long to do the safety checks and unless it's something very simple it goes into the next scale which is up to two hours, but the charge includes labour and all parts mine had a new fan, circuit board and outside flue and they came the same day. Can't remember the cost but it'll be on their website
People who are wrong are just as sure they're right as people who are right, the only difference is they're wrong
Why don't boilers ever pack up during a hot summer? The pump on our boiler 'blew' up on Christmas Eve a few years ago (The first of those two terrible winters!). We had no heating all over Christmas and no water either because the pipes froze from the mains into the house. 25 didn't take his woolly hat off for over a week!
Mine packed up the week before Christmas last year and as its probably about 30 years I thought it was terminal but it actually cost about £180 to fix and was sorted in a couple of days. Sadly though we had a gas leak after it was fixed which could have been terminal in more ways than one but it was all sorted quickly and without disaster.
Hope you get sorted soon as Cog. Sheepskin slippers are a great idea when its nippy.
Yep hope it's fixed soon Cogs. Our old boiler always played up during winter and usually after dark and at Xmas time! It was one of those with a pilot light and situated in the garage, subject to draughts which kept blowing out the pilot light. Hell of a job to keep it lit again.
Seems that a few of us have experienced this & can well & truly sympathise Cog. Ours went one January when it was snowing & it took a fortnight for the part to arrive & be fitted. We had an electric fire in the living room and I put the gas oven on low in the kitchen. The girls both had 4ft beds and were willing to bunk in together to share the electric blanket.
Mr Cog was on the phone first thing to a local company, and they should be here soon, quoted £84 + VAT for the first hour, so fingers crossed. We lit the fire in the sitting room and left the door open, and the house wasn't cold last night, and fortunately it's pretty mild this morning, so it's fine.
well, true to his word, he arrived, checked everything, and the pumps gone. He can't get a replacement till Monday, but it's ok, it's extremely mild today so we'll be fine till then.
