Boris and I had a serious falling out yesterday as I shouted at him very loudly. Mr FP and I were both upstairs putting some stuff away in the loft when there was a dreadful cat fight noise from downstairs. Mr FP told me that earlier on he had found Katya with a lump of fur missing after a similar noise. He went downstairs first as it is taking me quite a time to move at the moment and found Katya backed up into a corner with Boris attacking her again, another lump of fur detached from her side. Boris slunk off as soon as I made it downstairs and hid in the conservatory and wouldn't come out again after I told him off. He seems to attack her when he does not want to go outside because of the weather. He can be such a bully.
My boys fight all the time FP. I regularly have to clear up lumps of furs and funny enough I commented on Friday morning that there was enough fur on the stairs to knit a kitten! Its usually Alf that starts it but it is far more even handed that it might appear. It is definitely play though. And like you've said it is very definitely worse if the weather means they can't get out as much as normal.
There is a marked difference though between this kind of excess energy play than real fighting. When they were fighting for dominance at about age 18 months it was awful. That was full on squealing, growling and hissing. But even that settled after a week or so.
Awww, poor Katya. I hate the sound of cats fighting, but luckily our two didn't. The old lady Sukie kept well out of the way of the young upstart ( Sacha), though him being half Siamese was prone to a bit of temperament. Even the dog avoided him at certain times!
The problem lay with some very aggressive neighbouring cats who persisted in laying in wait in our garden!

That is good to know Tinks. Katya does have days where she chooses not to be in the same place as Boris at the same time and he definitely feels he should have first dabs on any treats - I always give them their Dreamies at the same time so he can't get his paws on hers but if there are handouts from Mr FP's sandwiches in the morning Boris gets his first then Katya will come along when he has had enough. Even though he is a big cat he can move like greased lightening - I am glad I am not a small creature in our neighbourhood.
My parents had sibling British Shorthairs like B&K - although different colours - and she would pick on him. My mum was advised to keep a water pistol handy to squirt her when it happened.
I wasn't sure it was a good idea in case it aggravated the situation and she took her displeasure out of him but it did the trick.
I assume Boris has had the op, FP?
Don't ask me what I think of you, I might not give the answer that you want me to.
I think it was last Thursday evening that the boys were really bad. And they will gallop up and down the stairs as part of their fights! The house rattles!! It all calmed down but it took ages then I went upstairs and they were curled up together fast asleep on the bed.
I think you need to work out if it is just rough and tumble play or if its more than that. Being two boys I'm quite happy for mine to play rough and tumble. Alfie is much smaller but on the whole gives every bit as good as he gets. And he often starts the fights. The reality is Harvey could beat Alf but he chooses not to. Harvey, as I've said, is quite a bit bigger and is very definitely the boss cat of the area outside.

Yes he has had the op Nellie. This morning he went out and she stayed in at about 10.30 they swapped over. No signs of overnight fighting. He isn't hiding today! He probably hadn't heard my playground voice before, I have to say it is very very loud.
I've used a water spray to stop my old cats coming in the kitchen. It worked really well. For some these two don't really bother with the kitchen unless its mealtimes. I can't be doing with cats on the kitchen work surfaces.
The only thing the boys do that drives me nuts is they get on the dining table. Sadly a water spray does nothing with Alf who is the main culprit naturally. A bit of water doesn't bother him. But i think I've fixed the problem by putting double sided tape on to bits of cardboard and putting those on the table ... sticky side up. They hate sticky stuff on their paws. I saw that on one of those animal behaviourist programs.
Despite being quite a lot smaller, Jasper would regularly torment Millie. Play fight most of the time, a bit OTT at others. She was always subservient towards him.
