She seems a very attentive mother the nest is just a bunch of sticks only about 5' off the ground and she ignores the noise and comings and going only flying off when the branch she's on gets moved but she's back again within minutes
People who are wrong are just as sure they're right as people who are right, the only difference is they're wrong
When the nest was built here last year, you had to wonder why the eggs never dropped out! As you say, a bunch of loosely woven sticks. If they keep coming there to nest, they will add to it each time making it bigger. It's fun to watch the male bringing her sticks that are obviously too big lol!
My resident pigeons have been collecting nesting material over the past few days, so I don’t know if they’re going to be laying eggs again or just “redecorating” their original nest. I think the weather has thrown them out of kilter.
They’ve certainly been “at it” a lot recently. The garden’s been quite noisy, especially as the patio door’s been open from early in the morning until late at night. Pigeons flapping about in the trees and the males chasing the females and the squirrels “shrieking” loudly for much of the day. It’s just as well that I don’t mind. 😉
Sad news the pigeon squabs had gone this morning! It was very noisy with the whacker plate, stump grinder and loads of delveries but Mrs Pigeon stayed put looking after her babies, I checked to see that they were OK shortly after the guys had gone and she wasn't on the nest so assumed she felt safe enough to leave them for a while, the squabs were fine they'd really grown a lot in the last 6 days. The workmen checked this morning the nest was empty and there were a few feathers under the tree, so sad but that's nature for you. I know it was nothing to do with my cats as they're really stressed out at the moment so they're only going out for half an hour or so before the guys arrive and they don't go out again
On the plus side every cloud has a silver lining, the guys have removed the nest and managed to cut the tree right back before Mr & Mrs Pigeon decided to try again!
People who are wrong are just as sure they're right as people who are right, the only difference is they're wrong
It's sad when that happens, the parents work so hard.
After the last squabs got predated here, I took the nest away and cut back where it had been built to deter them. It hasn't stopped them coming back for a look though. Wendy was sitting in the gap calling Walter yesterday. It made me feel very guilty, but the nest was only about 5-6 foot up and easily spotted.
I've always fancied a standing stone in the garden. Not a massive Stonehenge thingy, but an upright stone. I saw one in a garden centre a couple of years ago and coveted it. Actually it housed an expensive fountain, but I don't get on with fountains so it was not for me. I've sort of got a standing stone, a poor man's version that I dug up when I planted the crab apple tree in the front. I found the ideal spot for the tree and came across this little pointy stone. I kept digging and eventually unearthed a whopper. It now sits on a bit of lawn.
All this brings me to the stream that flows next to our house. It has completely dried up in parts so tonight I put my wellies on and climbed down the bank. Why? I could see an oblong shaped stone not too far away. It was not an easy venture, no siree! Getting down the bank was awkward. In fact I got down quicker than I intended, but a hot wash cycle in the washing machine will sort that out. The bed was slimy and slippery and every now & then I found a pothole. Halfway to my goal it dawned on me that it was going to be heavy and a challenge to get out, but faint hearts and all that. Finally I got to it. It was not what I thought. Two breeze blocks cemented together covered in muck Never mind. One day.
There were lots of midges BTW. They liked me. They liked me a lot.
