I had a call yesterday morning from Microsoft. My computer was in a really bad way. Tragic it was. I was not interested, but the lady was most persistent. Now I'm a placid soul, anyone will tell you, but I lost it when she said, "Please try to understand dear ..." I flipped. Tampin I was. She tried to out-talk me. ME! Himself was so alarmed that he actually came downstairs to see what was going on. I know! He said I sounded like a coach on a ruby field shouting from the sidelines. This morning they rang back & Jones took the call. He tells me he was bored so spent 40 minutes jumping to their "proofs" that our computer was in a bad way. He wanted to see what this scam was about. "See that number? We know that number on your computer because we really are from Microsoft." "Press xy&z. See all those errors flagged on your computer?" He was so good at being gullible that the woman called her manager to manage the next bit. It ended when they told him to download a programme. I can't repeat what he said. He eats with that mouth you know.
My landline rang a short while ago and I ignored it because I’m ex-directory and only the family and Him Ooop North have the number. It was probably a random scam call and, if it’s a recorded one, they know you’re around because you’ve answered the phone.
The ones who have my number know the “code signal” to dial so I know it’s one of them although inevitably they ring my mobile anyway.
It annoys me that health services -dentist, surgery, hospital- use 'Number Withheld'. I don't pick up and then get an a*sey letter. It's OK though, I can live with that.
I got a call just now on one of my mobiles. I can see the number and always answer but say absolutely nothing. Within 3 seconds they hang up and I block them. The reason that I answer is that, occasionally, it’s a number that I don’t recognise and it’s someone who needs to get in touch - eg a company. Friends and people I do want to speak to come up by name because they’re in my contacts list.
My main phone is just for the family, Him Ooop North and people like Directline, the doctor etc etc. I get unlimited free calls on that phone, but on the other one I don’t so I never use it for ringing people.
I must find the handbook for the landline phone 🙄 because I didn’t set it up for number recognition when I first got it. 😳
My earlier scam calls this week update. I received a letter from RBS today asking me to call regarding fraudulent activity . The letter didn't seem authentic (looked like a photocopy) so I called the number on the back of my card. Upshot is that some prat tried to use my card to buy £850 worth of goods from a marine supplier and £540 worth of goods from a motor cycle shop..
Fortunately RBS are on the ball and am now awaiting a new card. Very strange as this card never leaves the house and is only used for online transactions ...
