We’ve got a lot of squirrels here too. They seem to love my oak tree. I wonder if it’s the branches to race along or the acorns later in the season. I reckon it’s really the nuts I leave out for them. 😉
You've reminded me I need to go and stuff newspaper or something along the top of the summerhouse doors. Every year a queen wasp gets in. Fortunately, I usually discover it just a few days old, so easy to deal with.
The nest was small, about the size of a gobstopper. Only one resident was at home. It was in the bandstand and that's the only place in the back garden for man and cat to find deep shade in the summer.
Last years was about the size of an apple and it was really beautiful. I felt guilty taking it down when so much work had gone into it. The queen wasn't too happy about not be able to get back inside!
The mystery of finding my bird feeders on the ground a couple of time recently has been solved. They are positioned where the squirels can't get at them, but not a great spotted woodpecker who caught my eye when in the kitchen. It stared at me for a few seconds and disappeared, I've not heard it drilling trees yet. Apart from the great tits returning this year I have had pied wagtails, and last week a pair of green finches which I have never seen since living here. It could be the absence of cats now, or maybe a sign things are slowly improving for the wildlife in general.
I may have mentioned before on this thread that my neighbour has bird feeders, much to the delight of the rats and the squirrels. On Friday I saw him carry three trap cages up the drive.
Update Ruby The Terminator was out all night. Corpse of a vole was on the back step this morning. Oz looks depressed. That was his find yesterday. Waiting to see if Himself shows any vole bite symptoms.
